When to monitor stock market real time
I monitor realtime stock charts during every trading session. I trade for a living so I have to check live stock charts every trading day. I have my trading computer in office and I have also trading computer at home. I can stay home and I do the same work as I can do in my office. I can check realtime stock charts on both places. Also when I am traveling - and I must travel from time to time, due to business reasons or with my family - I use my trading notebook. This is very powerful notebook which can work as mobile workstation. I use same programs on all computers I use - in office, in home office and on notebook too. It allows me to check situation the same way regardless the place where I am. I trade for a living so I spend a lot of time in front of my every day trading computer. I monitor especially US stock markets from open till close. But I have noticed during my stock market career that it is not so hard and it is not so important to monitor stock market all the day. But there are times when every stock market trader should monitor real time stock market quotes of his/her opened trades or stock pick that wants to trade in his/her stock market strategy. Here I would like to describe what stock market real time chart I monitor and also what I think are most important part of stock market trading hours for monitoring of real time stock market quotes.
Realtime stock charts of major market indexes
First two charts I regularly monitor during my trading day routine are live stock charts of major US stock market indexes - S&P500 and Nasdaq100. As I prefer to see also premarket action before market opens I use
ETF shares
tracking these major indexes. I have both charts in the same place to better understand which part of market is stronger and which is weaker. Also It helps me to monitor how stock market indexes act during trading day. Are they weak generally or is the situation bullish ? This observation helps me with management of my open trades and with better management of my entries and exists.
Live stock charts of my open positions
I have my open trades listed in one portfolio window in my
stock trading software
I use intraday. I have two types of realtime stock charts:Historical stock charts, there are daily , weekly and monthly technical stock charts and intraday live stock charts. I have all these charts linked into one group. It means that when I change symbol in one chart all stock price charts of the same group change to the same symbol too. Then I move though list of my opened trades in my portfolio and checking situation on its live stock charts. This procedure I do two or three times during trading day. I also check individual ticker when I see alert that price of my ticker is moving and I have to do some
trade management
for this individual trade.

and ETF picks I monitor for possible new trade
As I mentioned I do my main
stock chart analysis
when US stock markets are closed. I prefer to check static historical stock charts - not moving during intraday trading action. List of my
stock trade setups and ETF picks
I have placed in one my watchlist window on my stock trading software I use intraday. Then I use same linked group of technical stock charts as for opened positions. I check this list of my stock trading setups two or three times in a trading day. I check individual ticker when alert I set for it announces me that price is moving close to my entry point. Then I monitor it closely and set up my
entry order
. I also check whole list during two times during a day, the second time it is in last trading hour just before close.

The monitoring of real time stock market quotes is important task that every stock market trader should do. If you are day trader then it is critical for intra day trading strategies.But stock market real time quotes are also important if you are swing trader, position trader and also active investors should have knowledge how to monitor real time stock market quotes I personally feel that there are two periods when it is important to monitor stock market real time. First one is opening time. It is good to see how market opens and what market does during first hour or two. I do not place my stop loss order
before stock market is opened.
And then the second important time period is
stock market close.
